International Year of the Reef 2008 Event

Riffe sind Frühwarnsysteme für globale Umwelt­verän­derungen. Die Bedeutung von Korallenriffen für Küstenschutz, Fischfang, Medizin, aber auch für Tourismus als Haupteinnahmequelle vieler Regionen macht es notwendig, das Bewusstsein und Verständnis für ihre Funktionen und deren Schutzwürdigkeit zu stärken. Die Internationale Korallenriff-Initiative ("International Coral Reef Initiative") fasste daher auf ihrer Generalversammlung im mexikanischen Cozumel im Oktober 2006 den Beschluss, das Jahr 2008 zum "Internationalen Jahr des Riffes 2008" auszurufen. Das Museum für Naturkunde in Berlin koordiniert die entsprechenden Aktivitäten in Deutschland.

The ICRI International Year of the Reef 2008 is a worldwide campaign to raise awareness about the value and importance of coral reefs and threats to their sustainability, and to motivate people to take action to protect them. All individuals, corporations, schools, governments, and organizations are welcome and actively encouraged to participate in IYOR 2008.
