Near-surface geothermal energy is taken to mean the abstraction of heat from drilling depths of up to 400 metres to supply buildings, plants or infrastructure. Heat is abstracted from the ground by means of a heat exchanger and adjusted to the desired temperature at the surface by a heat pump.
