Rotterdam Convention (PIC) enters into force Event

Die Konvention sieht vor, dass Importländern die notwendigen Informationen über Chemikalien zur Verfügung gestellt werden, um potentielle Risiken zu erfassen. (Vorherige Einverständniserklärung = Prior Informed Consent, PIC). Ein Land kann den Import einer PIC-Chemikalie ablehnen, wenn der sichere Umgang mit einem Stoff in diesem Land nicht gewährleistet werden kann. Weitere Bestimmungen der PIC-Konvention wie z.B. Kennzeichnungspflichten des Exporteurs tragen zur sicheren Anwendung der Chemikalien bei, falls dem Import zugestimmt wurde. Die Rotterdam-Konvention ist am 24. Februar 2004 in Kraft getreten.

The Convention establishes the principle that export of a chemical covered by the Convention can only take place with the prior informed consent of the importing party. The Convention establishes a "Prior Informed Consent procedure," a means for formally obtaining and disseminating the decisions of importing countries as to whether they wish to receive future shipments of specified chemicals and for ensuring compliance with these decisions by exporting countries.
