Abbot Point: Federal Government approves huge coal port expansion near Great Barrier Reef Event

Der australische Kohlehafen Abbot Point wird erweitert. Am 21. Dezember 2015 stimmte der australische Umweltminister Greg Hunt der Erweiterung zu, für die etwa 1,1 Millionen Kubikmeter Sand und Schlamm abgebaggert werden sollen in etwa 20 Kilometer Entfernung vom Great Barrier Reef. Der Abraum soll entgegen früheren Plänen nicht in das als Weltnaturerbe geschützte Korallenriff geschüttet werden, sondern wird an Land entsorgt werden.

On 21 December 2015, Federal Environment Minister Greg Hunt gave the go-ahead to the expansion of the Abbot Point Coal Terminal near Bowen in north Queensland, making it one of the world's largest coal ports. The controversial project involves dredging 1.1 million cubic metres of spoil near the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, which will then be disposed of on land.
