Yasuní-Initiative ist gescheitert Event

Am 15. August 2013 erklärte Ecuadors Präsident Rafael Correa, dass er Ölbohrungen im Yasuní-Naturpark zulassen will. Das internationales Abkommen zum Schutz des artenreichen Gebiets am Amazonas bezeichnete er als gescheitert und verwies auf fehlende internationale Finanzhilfen. Im Jahr 2007 hatte der Präsident angeboten, auf die Förderung der 850 Millionen Barrel Öl im Yasuní-Gebiet zu erzichten. Als Gegenleistung für diesen Beitrag im Kampf gegen den Klimawandel sollten Industriestaaten 3,6 Milliarden US-Dollar in einen Kompensationsfonds der UN einzahlen.

On 15 August 2013, President Rafael Correa explained that Ecuador will open up part of the Amazon rainforest to oil drilling after the Yasuni-ITT Initiative had only attracted investment of US$13.3 million dollars instead of the US$3.6 billion Ecuador needs to compensate for lost oil revenues. Yasuni-ITT Initiative was a proposal by the government of Ecuador to refrain indefinitely from exploiting the oil reserves of the Ishpingo-Tambococha-Tiputini (ITT) oil field within the Yasuni National Park, in exchange for half of the value of the reserves, or $3.6 billion over 13 years from the international community.
