  14. Global Nature Fund nominates Lake Tanganyika in Burundi, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Tanzania and Zambia as the “Threatened Lake of the Year 2017". Sedimentation, pollution and overexploitation jeopardize the second largest lake in Africa. Containing almost 17 % of the world's available fresh water Lake Tanganyika is of global importance and source of life for millions of people. On the World Day of Wetlands, the GNF draws attention to the importance of lakes and wetlands all over the world. Together with the local Living Lakes partner organization Biraturaba, the GNF calls for sustainable measures to preserve Lake Tanganyika.

With the decision to implement the first African Landscape of the Year in Senegal and Gambia, the Annual Conference took an important first step. The newly developing network of Naturfriends organisations in Africa has turned into a vital part of our movement and makes values such as solidarity and global justice visible through partnership-based projects.  According to the motto „Hand in Hand with Africa“, the first African Landscape of the Year shall initiate important local activities which will be accompanied by activities in Europe to show solidarity.

While doing so, it paved the way for plants and animals. The blue-green rock dweller, belonging to the cyanobacteria lives like all algae, from sunlight, and is of great interest to ecologists, biotechnologists, and desert- and space researchers.
