The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has followed the request of Germany, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, and Sweden to designate the Baltic Sea as a "Particularly Sensitive Sea Area" (PSSA). Because of its low salinity and water exchange the Baltic Sea has hardly any self-healing power in case of pollution by oil or other dangerous substances.
